From Gravel to Pavement

A gravel to asphalt conversion turns a dirt or rock drive into a paved one. Around Hanford, that usually means a long country driveway, a road to a shop or barn, or a yard where equipment and trucks park. Gravel is cheap to start with, but it washboards, ruts, throws dust in summer and turns to mud in winter, and it needs regular grading and new rock. Asphalt ends most of that.

Using what is already there

An old gravel drive is often a useful starting point. If the rock is clean and well compacted, it can become part of the new base. We test it, add crushed rock where it is thin or mixed with soil, regrade, and compact it before paving. Where the gravel has been pushed into soft soil, we dig out and rebuild those areas.

Drainage first

Gravel drains through itself; asphalt does not. When a drive is paved, water that used to soak in now runs off the surface, so it has to have a planned path. On flat Kings County ground, we build a crown down the middle of long drives, shape shoulders so water leaves the edge, and set the grade at gates and culverts. Without that, the new pavement will pond and fail early.

Sized for farm traffic

Ranch roads and shop yards often carry far more weight than a house driveway: loaded pickups, stock trailers, feed trucks, sometimes tractors. Those loads need a deeper base and thicker asphalt. We ask what uses the road and set the section accordingly.

Hot mix or recycled?

For low-traffic rural drives, compacted recycled asphalt millings can be a budget option: firmer and less dusty than gravel, though rougher and less durable than hot-mix. HomeGuide lists recycled asphalt driveways at about $4 to $9 per square foot. For the busiest sections, like the stretch by the house or a yard where trucks turn, hot-mix asphalt is the better surface. Many owners combine the two.

Paving in stages

A long drive does not have to be paved all at once. We can grade and base the entire road, then pave the most-used part first and extend later. Doing the base work up front means later sections tie in cleanly.

Shoulders and edges

The edges of a converted road take the most abuse: tires drop off, water runs along them, and the soil next to them softens. We compact the base past the asphalt edge and shape the shoulder so it supports the pavement and sheds water away. Where tires regularly leave the pavement, such as at turnouts and gates, a wider paved area prevents broken edges.

Gravel to Asphalt Conversion Questions

Can you pave right over my gravel?

Often, yes, after it is regraded, topped up with crushed rock and compacted. Gravel mixed into soft soil has to be dug out first.

How do I keep water from ponding on a paved ranch road?

With a crown down the center and shaped shoulders, so water runs off both sides. Culvert crossings and gates need their own grades.

Is tar and chip an option?

It can be for rural roads. It is cheaper than hot-mix but rougher and needs renewing more often. We can discuss whether it suits your road.

Can tractors use an asphalt road?

Rubber-tired tractors, yes, on a properly built section. Steel tracks and implements dragged on the surface will damage it.
