Paving in the Kings County Seat

Asphalt paving in Hanford serves a city that has grown steadily for more than a century. The Southern Pacific laid tracks through a sheep camp here in 1877, the town was named for railroad executive James Madison Hanford, and it incorporated on August 12, 1891. When Kings County was formed in 1893, Hanford became the county seat. The 2020 census counted 57,990 residents, up from 15,179 in 1970, and the city keeps adding homes on its edges.

Downtown and older neighborhoods

Around Courthouse Square and China Alley, home to the 1893 Taoist Temple, lots are narrow and many homes have long side drives to garages in back. Older driveways here were often paved thin, over little rock. When they sink and break into small pieces, the fix is to remove them, build a real base and repave. Where the surface is gray but still level, crack filling and a sealcoat buy years.

Newer subdivisions

Hanford more than tripled between 1970 and 2010, and the subdivisions from the 1980s through the 2000s now have driveways, side yards and RV pads that are 15 to 40 years old. Many are good candidates for an overlay; others need edges rebuilt or low spots corrected so water stops ponding.

Country roads and shop yards

Just outside city limits, properties have long drives, metal shops and equipment yards. These see pickups with trailers, feed trucks and tractors. We build heavier sections where loads are heavy and set a crown so water runs off on flat ground.

Drainage on old lake-shore ground

Hanford sits on flat ground north of the old Tulare Lake bed, with the People's Ditch, an 1870s irrigation canal, running north to south through the city. There is very little natural fall. On every job we set the grade so water reaches the street, a ditch or a planter, never the garage or the foundation.

Heat and fog

July days average about 98 degrees, and winters bring tule fog. Spring and fall are the most reliable seasons for paving and sealing; summer jobs start at dawn, and winter jobs wait for dry spells.

Jobs we see most in Hanford

  • Replacing thin, sunken driveways in the older blocks around downtown
  • Overlays and sealing in subdivisions from the 1980s through 2000s
  • Shop yards, equipment pads and long drives just outside city limits
  • Lot repair and restriping for businesses along the main corridors

Each estimate includes a look at where water goes, because on Hanford's flat ground that decides how long the pavement lasts.

Hanford Questions

Do I need a permit to repave my driveway in Hanford?

Repaving on your own lot often does not involve the city, but changing the approach or curb at the street usually does. We confirm the City of Hanford's current requirements before scheduling that kind of work.

My driveway near downtown sinks in spots. Can it be patched?

Small areas can be patched with a saw-cut repair. If sinking is widespread, the base has failed, and replacement is the lasting fix.

Can you pave my shop yard outside town?

Yes. We size the section for the trucks and equipment that use it and set a crown or slope so water drains off the flat yard.

What month is best to pave in Hanford?

April through June and September through October are the most reliable. Summer works with early starts.

Will my Hanford driveway crack in the summer heat?

Heat alone rarely cracks a well-built driveway, but it softens asphalt so heavy loads can rut it. A proper section for the vehicles you park and regular sealing prevent most heat damage.

Do you pave around China Alley and downtown?

Yes. Downtown lots and alleys are small and busy, so we keep work short and the area tidy.
