Fixing What Caused the Failure
Asphalt repair works best when it deals with why the pavement failed. In the Hanford area, the usual reasons are water sitting on flat ground and soaking into the base during winter, heavy farm or delivery trucks on a thin section, and edges that crumble where they meet dirt. A shovel of cold patch lasts a season. A saw-cut repair that replaces the base lasts as long as the surrounding pavement.
What we repair
- Potholes in driveways, ranch roads and lots
- Alligator cracking from failed base
- Ruts from heavy loads in summer heat
- Crumbling edges along dirt shoulders
- Settled trenches from water lines and irrigation work
- Cracks that let water into the base
Methods
Most repairs are saw-cut patches: we cut out a rectangle around the damage, remove asphalt and soft base, compact new rock, and pave it with hot-mix asphalt. HomeGuide puts saw-cut repairs at $4 to $12 per square foot and hot patching at $2 to $5. Surface-only damage can sometimes be handled with an infrared repair or a thin skin patch. We explain which method fits and why.
Edges on country roads
Ranch roads and long drives often fail first at the edges, where tires drop off the pavement onto soft shoulders. We rebuild the edge with compacted base, pave it back, and shape the shoulder so it supports the asphalt and sheds water.
Cracks
Cracks are how water gets into the base. Filling them before the winter rains is cheap protection. Wide cracks get cleaned and filled with hot rubberized sealant. Areas of connected cracking need patching, not filling.
Small jobs and delivery distance
Hot-mix asphalt comes from a plant, and HomeGuide notes that delivery beyond 15 to 20 miles can add $40 to $65 an hour. On small repair jobs, we group work to keep the cost reasonable, and we give you a price before we start.
Repair or replace?
When more than about a third of a driveway or lot is cracked, patched or sinking, repairs start to cost more over time than replacement. At the estimate we mark each problem area, price repairs, and if replacement is close in cost, we price that too so you can compare.
Repairs on farm roads
Ranch roads and yards fail in predictable places: at gates, where trucks turn; along edges, where tires drop off; and at low spots, where water sits. We rebuild those areas with a heavier section and correct the drainage so they hold up.
Temporary vs permanent
Cold patch is useful as a quick, temporary fix in wet weather or for a small pothole that cannot wait. It is not permanent. We use it when needed and come back with a proper hot-mix repair when conditions allow.

Asphalt Repair Questions
Why do potholes keep coming back?
Because the wet or broken base under them was not replaced. Saw-cut repairs remove that base and stop the cycle.
Should I repair or replace my driveway?
If damage is limited to a few areas, repair. If most of the surface is cracked or patched, replacement is often cheaper over time.
Can you repair a ranch road edge?
Yes. We rebuild the edge with base and asphalt and reshape the shoulder.
When should I fill cracks?
Before the winter rains, ideally in late summer or fall.
Can you repair asphalt in winter?
On dry days, yes. Hot patches need dry conditions; cold patch can be used as a temporary fix in wet weather.
